Volcanic Island Tour

The islands Brusnik and Jabuka stand out in Croatia as the only ones crafted entirely from lava rock, recognized and preserved as nature monuments

Tour details

1 Jabuka, an uninhabited volcanic island, has an impressive pyramid-shaped cliff towering 97 meters high, accessible only from the southwest during favorable weather conditions. It, along with the island of Brusnik, is the only Adriatic island built of volcanic rock and was declared a geological monument of nature in 1985.

The island's harsh climate supports only two endemic species: the black lizard and the Centaurea plant ("zecina"). Once the habitat of an extinct endemic carnation, Jabuka is surrounded by waters rich in fish. Situated in deep waters, isolated from other islands and channels, Jabuka is exposed to strong winds, requiring significant sailing knowledge. In the era before motorboats, only the bravest, most enduring fishermen dared to sail to the island to provide for their families by catching large fish and trapping valued lobsters.

While Jabuka is a captivating sight in summer, the winter winds turn it into a hazardous adventure with towering waves, emphasizing the island's dual nature of awe and danger.

2 Once Croatia's most isolated inhabited island, Svetac, or Saint Andrew, rests 15 miles away from Komiža. Although currently uninhabited, the island preserves stories of Illyrian Queen Teuta, evidenced by the crumbling stone castle walls of her stronghold, Teuta's City. Svetac serves as a breeding ground for Eleonora's Falcons, a rare bird species with approximately 80 nesting pairs in Croatia. These falcons migrate to Madagascar each September, returning to their nests on the island come April.

3 Brusnik, an islet located 13 nautical miles from Komiža, looks like the Moon, but beneath the surface, it hides a vibrant underwater world in the Adriatic Sea. Designated as a Natural Monument, it stands out due to its geological structure and diverse plant and wildlife, including the endemic "Dubrovačka zečina" plant and the black lizard. Protected against endangering the ecosystem, Brusnik faces constant winds due to its position in the open sea.

The surrounding waters are rich in fish, and fishermen from Komiža once ingeniously created lobster basins called "jastozere" using the island's channels. Remnants of their stone-built homes still exist, testifying to a bygone era of fishing.
